How different types of houses are shaping our future: Esther’s Story (VIDEO)
This is the story of a woman who has managed to find a home solution in one of the most built-up countries in the world. Her way, a Tiny Home, may not be for everyone. But she has an interesting perspective to offer the world. Says Esther: People with different types of houses and alternative lifestyles hold the key to the way we live in the future. You can watch a documentary about her story below.
There is a song in the Netherlands that goes something like this: “Your very own home, a place under the sun. And always someone in the neighbourhood who can love you.” Everyone in the country knows the song. You can listen to it here (and see some images of Dutch different types of houses while you do). But the Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with big housing shortages. And for many people it has become virtually impossible to realise this ideal image of owning your own beautiful home.
In this video we take a look into the life of Esther and her Tiny Trailer. Somewhere in the green low fields of the Netherlands. Realising her Tiny Home life has not been easy, because rules and regulations continue to make it difficult for her. That is a shame, says Esther. Because people who live in different types of houses can hold the key to how we live in the future. They should be listened to, instead of hindered. This is her story.
A better world nearby
This documentary was made by Pieter Klein and filmmaker Frank Jan de Kat. Together they produce little mini documentaries. About initiatives that are not often seen in the media, but that make the world a little more beautiful. You can these films here, on the YouTube-channel “Een betere wereld in de buurt”, or “A better world nearby.”

About Esther
Since 2008, Dutch Esther van der Tak has been working with children, parents, and adolescents. She helps them with issues related to chronic health, and often challenges with self-esteem. In addition, through her company Sincerely Energetic (Oprecht Energiek) Esther supports companies in improving their employee work environment and policies. She also helps them in her role as a confidential counsellor.
Esther lives in her Tiny Home in a green meadow in the middle of the Netherlands. She plans to pack her bags and house and move to Scandinavia in a few years. That is her wish for the future: a great goal to continue to fulfill her needs in life, Esther explains.
